Discussion:
Availability of SAPI, speech, for netbooks?

I'm considering a personal "netbook" purchase now or in the near
foture. Asus T91 with touchscreen is what I've got my eye on.

At some risk of exhausting the little thing - which can stomp most of
the original "Tablet PCs" - I'd be interested in trying speech once
again. But currently this PC only comes with Windows XP Home. It may
or may not in future have Windows 7 - Starter Edition seems to be the
"netbook" offering.

So I suppose I'm asking:

1. Can I add speech to XP Home - for instance by buying/downloading
the SAPI 5.1 SDK,
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=5e86ec97-40a7-453f-b0ee-6583171b4530&DisplayLang=en> (?), an
appropriate Microsoft Office version, Dragon, or other third-party
software?

2. Is SAPI included in every Windows 7 versionas with Vista, including
"netbooks"?

3. What other questions /should/ I be asking?

(Although the term "netbook" is widely understood to mean any portable
"Internet appliance" PC, it may also be somebody's trademark.)

There is a very good version of Windows Speech Recognition included in
Office 2003. If you can load Office 2003, you will be able to use speech
recognition as long as you have a good microphone and the sound card is not
introducing electronic noise.

Thanks for the thought. I've been quoted more for Office 2003 than
the computer itself costs. I /can/ live without speech, I think.

Less cost if a trial edition of Office is available. I think I saw
something about that. If I have that and I allow it to expire, can I
keep the speech for Windows part?

I also have issues with Microsoft speech recognition in XP Tablet
Edition. Vista's is supposed to be way better to use, but I haven't
tried it.

So what about Windows 7 Starter Edition, which apparently is what
netbooks will get? Every Vista from Home Basic up has speech
recognition, but that doesn't mean that Windows 7 will. Features and
functions have been dropped in new Windows versions before. A
calendar, for instance. Compressed storage support has been in, out,
in, out. I have a Zip tool for desktop but not on the server...

I don't know if WSR will be included or not. If you get the Netbook with Win
7 please let us know if it is or isn't included.

Thanks,
Marty
